How to free up space on iPhone

What:

iPhone, iPad

Problem:

iPhone is running our of space, you need a way of clearing space on your device.

Solution:

Quick way of gaining some space is to force your iPhone to remove cached and temporary data.
This trick was originally posted on Reditt. Go to iTunes and search for the movie (with a bigger file size than what you have left on storage i.e. Cleopatra), click rent and soon you'll get the message saying you don't have enough storage and offers you to go to settings. Click that and magically you will get some storage back, repeat the process 2-3 times to recover more space.

Photos and Videos normally take up majority of the space, so to clean up iPhone's storage you can install a free "Google Photos" application, which has unlimited backup space for photos and videos, as long as you set upload size to "high quality", this allows Google to compress them. Now when backup is done you, click on "Free up space" in Google Photos app and remove photos and videos which are already backed up from your device.

If you're security conscious and do not wish anyone to have access to your photos and videos install "Mega" app, which will give you a 50GB free storage and encrypt all your data. This app will automatically backup your photos & videos and store them on the servers where not even hosting provider will have access to them. Mega is not only mobile app, they also provide web interface and native applications for Windows, Mac and Linux, so you can backup any store securely any data. Please remember that if you forget your password you won't be able to use "Forgotten password" option and your data will be lost.

If you prefer to keep Photos and Videos on your device then you can follow below steps to free up some storage.

Videos take up quite a lot of space, as default on my iPhone 5 they are saved as 1080p, change it in "Photos & Camera" settings to 720p which is also high definition, you won't be able to tell the difference in quality if you watch it only on your mobile. From now on all new videos will be half of the size. For Photos under HDR settings, disable "Keep Normal Photo" to get rid of duplicates.

You can also shrink your current videos. Go to the App Store and search for "Video Compressor" app download it and convert your videos. After conversion it will allow you to remove original files and free up space.
